Hawai‘i Lab

Wedge-tailed shearwaters in Hawaii

Oikonos is leading a research and educational partnership to study and conserve Hawaiian seabirds and their habitats, on land and at sea.

This collaboration is focused on the Hawai‘i Pacific University Pelagicos Lab, at the Oceanic Institute, on Waimanalo (O‘ahu). Since 2008, we have mentored 7 graduate and 10 undergraduate students engaged in applied research projects and collaborated with USGS to quantify where seabirds forage in the main Hawaiian islands. These efforts have, to date, contributed to 5 Masters theses, 8 independent research projects and 5 publications. Five projects are currently under way.
